The organizing committee consisted of the 2 Workshop administrators, S. F. Kaval and T. J. Beveridge, and H. König, U. B. Sleytr and T. Volcanü. Highresolution electron microscopy of the cell surface was carried out on envelopes prepared by gentle sonication and subsequent treatment with DNAse. Fig. 3a is a cell envelope unidirectionally shadowed showing the periodic hexagonal arrangement of the morphological units. A surface reconstruction from such a preparation (Fig. 3b) reveals the dome-shaped morphological units and their six subunits. It also clearly establishes the polarity with the dome facing outwards from the cell. Figure 2b.

Many of the recently detected human S-layer bacteria are from the oral cavity. , Aeromonas and Campylobacter, see chapters by Blaser, Kay and Trust in this book), there is very little information about the S-Iayers of human pathogens other than ultrastructural data. Potentially interesting S-Iayer bacteria isolated from humans are given in Table 1. Structure and Occurrence of the S-Layers The S-Iayers of all gram-negative anaerobes that we have studied have a hexagonal symmetry with the exception of Bacteroides forsythus (Table 1).
