He even had a list prepared—potassium nitrate, sulfur, and charcoal. He hoped to buy amounts of these substances to take back to Milwaukee, where he and two friends were going to build a working rocket. Initially, they had wanted to build a liquid-fuel rocket along the lines of those developed by pioneers Robert Goddard, Hermann Oberth, and Wernher von Braun—but such plans proved beyond their capabilities, so the three teens had settled on a solid-fuel rocket instead. Three proposals were actively considered: the direct ascent mode, the Earth orbit rendezvous, and the lunar orbit rendezvous. Of these, the latter, called the LOR, initially encountered the most resistance from officials. The brainchild of NASA engineer John Houbolt, the LOR required several complex flight maneuvers and two space vehicles, one of which would remain in orbit around the moon, while the other, a much lighter craft, transported two astronauts from lunar orbit to the moon’s surface.

He hadn’t yet reached his highest goal: he wanted to go to the moon. Even more important than landing on the moon, however, was being assigned as commander of a lunar 59 60 THE APOLLO 13 MISSION mission. With Apollo 13 it seemed Lovell would get the chance to do both. When the original Apollo mission flight and crew selections were handed out, Jim Lovell was tapped as commander of the backup crew for the Apollo 11 voyage. After the mission’s outstanding success, Lovell, Haise, and Ken Mattingly began training for their own moon mission, Apollo 14, scheduled for October 1970.
